The haunting vocals of Elena Tonra rule ‘Daughter’ and their recent EP. Upon hearing her, it isn’t impossible to believe she could be the love child of Cat Power and Sarah Blasko. Elena has formed with Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguiella to produce a seemingly intense folk- indie EP. A mixture of dreamy vocal melodies together with simple but catchy riffs, played on acoustic guitar and piano that still manage to sound interesting rather than trendy. It is a job well done. Bellowing drums and distant backing vocals invite the ambience and some stronger moments swallow us inside the infinite sadness of heartbreak. It gets interesting with the perfect mesh-up of post indie sounds, intense drums ( similar to the XX beats) and soft synth drones.
This is an EP that requires the right time and place but don’t be put off by it’s intensity. We have here an EP hard to fault.
