Velcro’s ‘Wagga Wagga’ Reviewed

If one was to wander in to the infamous ‘Tote’ in Collingwood, Melbourne — it is more likely than not you would run into one of the lads from Velcro. Whether they’d be pouring you a beer, playing a show or just having a jam at the bar, it’s quite hard to miss one of if not all of the band members.

These fellas have thrown themselves head first into the music scene in Melbourne after moving from Turvey Park, in far-away Wagga Wagga. Gigging close to every night, in the inner-northern suburbs of Melbourne, has seen Velcro build a loyal group of followers. Although its hard to keep track of  which band is playing where- since each of the guys in Velcro play in a handful of bands to say the least.

‘Wagga Wagga’ is a catchy little indie number and you can’t help to like all of frontman, Curtis Wakeling’s tunes. His songs are simple but crafted with thought. His lyrics are mainly about day to day obstacles, which is a nice change from a lot indie outfits who try to be professional tear jerkers. So expect to hear songs about having a few beers and riding a bike with a cold face (Shark bite 2) and even meeting someone you don’t really like but it doesn’t matter cause we can still have a good day anyway (Portsea).
Each song is made up of two electric guitars played in a slow fashion effervescent Velvet Underground. They are backed with some minimal drums and Curtis’s Toby Martin cross James Mercer vocal. The more you listen the more you enjoy the dreamy wofty tones and simple but catchy melodies. Although I enjoyed ‘Wagga Wagga’ I’m really looking forward to seeing what the boys from the Collingwood underground come up with next.

The pick of the songs were ‘Awkward Mornings’,  G&T and Shark Bite 2.

Wagga Wagga gets 7 out of 10
